Frequently asked questions
What is a MAC address lookup?
Every network device has a MAC address, and the first part of it is a prefix that the IEEE assigns to a single organization. A MAC address lookup, or MAC address finder, takes that prefix and tells you which organization registered it. That is usually the company that made the device, or the company that made its network chip.
What formats can I enter?
Any of the usual ones. Colons, hyphens, periods, or no separators at all, in upper or lower case. You can paste the whole address or just the start of it. Most blocks match on the first six characters, and the smaller blocks the IEEE hands out need seven or nine.
What is an OUI?
OUI stands for Organizationally Unique Identifier. It is the 24-bit prefix at the start of a MAC address, written as the first six hex characters, that the IEEE assigns to a company through its MA-L registry. The IEEE also assigns smaller MA-M and MA-S blocks, along with the older IAB and CID lists, and we check all of them.
Why does it say Not found?
The prefix is not in the IEEE registry. That usually means a typo, a brand new assignment that the IEEE has not published yet, or a device whose address was never registered. We pull fresh data from the IEEE multiple times each day, so new assignments show up quickly.
Why does it say Locally administered address?
One bit in the first byte of a MAC address marks it as locally administered, which means software set the address rather than the manufacturer. Phones and laptops now randomize their Wi-Fi address for each network they join, and virtual machines and containers make their addresses up. None of those are registered with anyone, so there is no vendor to find. The real hardware address is still on the device, usually in its network settings.
Can a lookup tell me who owns a device or where it is?
No. A MAC address identifies the manufacturer of the network interface and nothing else. It does not contain a location, an IP address, a serial number or an owner. If there is an unknown device on your network, a lookup can tell you it was made by Samsung or Sonos or Espressif, which is usually enough to figure out what it is.
Is this free?
Yes. Lookups on this page are free. The API is free as well for up to 1,000 requests a day with no key or registration, and there are paid plans if you need more than that.
